ANGELES CITY – For a small public elementary school with around 300 students, Grade 5 teacher Eloisa Canlas says you cannot judge donated books by their cover.
“Used but they are still very useful. We share them with students and we often use them as references,” says Ms. Canlas during SM Foundation’s Donate-A-Book program held on September 17 in SM City Clark here.
The Don Ambrosio Mendiola Elementary School in Angeles City where Ms. Canlas teaches was just one of the 69 other beneficiaries of the program.
These schools, represented by teachers and principals, were given different kinds of reference books and science magazines like Bato-Balani and Salaguinto.
Citing perennial problems in public schools like the lack of books, Ms. Canlas also reveals that even teachers like her also suffer from it.
She teaches Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan but has no books about the subject.
“Walang ibinigay sa aming libro so kailangan ko pang bumili sa sarili kong pera. Kaya malaking tulong din ang mga mga librong ito na galing sa SM,” says Ms. Canlas.
SM City Clark Assistant Mall Manager Ana Datu disclosed that they, together with SM City Pampanga, donated at least 2,000 books to at least 71 public schools (elementary and high school) in the province.
Most of the school-beneficiaries are from Angeles City, Mabalacat and Mexico towns. At least 200 schools in the province have already benefited from the Donate- A-Book program.
Datu says they have donated around two million books to various public schools nationwide. “This is not only happening here at SM City Clark but also in all the 34 SM malls in the country.”
While not all beneficiaries made it to the book donation, SM City Pampanga Public Relations Officer Roselle Sarmiento says the books will be given to other public schools in the City of San Fernando.
“Other teachers and principals visit us in the office and ask for some books,” she adds.
TEDIOUS PROCESS
Datu says SM Foundation’s book donation undergoes a process. “It’s not as easy as it looks like, it’s tedious.”
She says each bundle is a selection of books and science magazines, and every item is checked to make sure that it has complete number of pages.
