ANGELES CITY – “We do this to be closer to communities.”

Thus said Aziz Younes, president of the US Embassy Golf Club (USEGC), during their group’s tournament at the Royal Garden Golf and Country Club (RGGCC) here on Saturday.
“We also do it to raise funds like last year,” added Younes, US Embassy Manila attaché and Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) project director.

He disclosed that US Ambassador Harry Thomas led last year a golf tournament in Manila which raised some P850,000.

Younes added that the funds raised by Thomas and their golf club had been donated to charitable institutions.

Composed of more than 100 members, the USEGC and Thomas will hold two fund-raising tournaments this year in Baguio City and Manila.

Younes joined 64 members in holding their US President’s Day Golf Tournament at the all-weather championship golf course in at the boundary of Angeles City and Porac. It has been held in the same golf course for the past three years.

Younes and golf tournament event organizer Alfredo Suarez thanked Ruperto “Perto” Cruz, owner of the RGGCC, for his “hospitality.”

Younes gifted Cruz a USEGC golf bag inscribed with the latter’s name and a plaque of appreciation from the US ambassador.

The over-all champion in the two-day event which started in Tarlac on March 4 was Raquel Santos. The champion at the RGGCC on March 5 was Rolly Basco.

Assisting Younes in organizing the tournament was his fellow club member Jeff Green.

Younes said Thomas was supposed to join them but he attended an activity in Tarlac on the same day.
