TARLAC CITY – The Tarlac State University’s string of successes in national student art competitions has remained unbroken with another triumphant bid this year by a third-year student of the university’s College of Fine Arts and Architecture.

Fine Arts student Chrisanto N. Aquino placed second honorable mention in the Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) company’s 23rd Visual Art National Competition.

Titled “Diskarteng Sining,” Aquino’s work is a mixed media with dimensions 34 ½ x 27 ½ square inches. It is an interpretation of this year’s PLDT theme: “Tribute to the Filipino Micro-Entrepreneur.”

Aquino’s art work, together with the other finalists, is at present being exhibited on the ground floor of the Museum of the Filipino People at the Rizal Park in Manila City. The exhibit runs from February 7-28.

In 2005, Judeo Herrera, a TSU BFA student, placed second in the PLDT art contest with an oil-on-canvas work titled “Transcendental Value of Love,” which was used as a cover art work for PLDT’s Northern Luzon directory.

In 2006, another TSU BFA student, Mark Miclat, won fifth prize with his mixed media entry titled “Pag-ibig, Pag-asa at Pananalig ang Pangunahing Kailangan ng Bawat Isa Tungo sa Totoong Tagumpay ng Pilipinas.”

Herrera also set the record in the annual student art competitions sponsored by the oil company Petron of being the only participant to win two consecutive grand prizes and grand prizes in two different categories.

In 2005, Herrera’s 91.44 cm x 121.92 cm work, titled “Malikhaing Umpisa, Makulay na Pagsasama,” won the grand prize in ArtPetron 5’s oil painting category. In ArtPetron 6 in 2006 his entry, titled “Okir-Okir,” bested more than 500 others, winning the grand prize in watercolor painting.
