SAMAL, Bataan- This agricultural town on Monday night held its first Buntis Pageant aimed at reminding women of proper maternal health care.

Twelve young ladies from 12 of 14 barangays of the town joined the pageant to vie for the crown of “Mrs. Buntis 2015”.

They were presented before a big crowd filling the spacious covered court in the town plaza. The candidates after being introduced one by one paraded in casual wear and later in their formal attire.

A male nurse serenaded the participants while in their formal wear.

The large audience giggled and cheered heartily as some candidates shook their hips in rhythm to fast dance numbers to show their talent as if forgetting they were pregnant.

The pageant was part of Buntis Congress, a project of the municipal health center under Dr. Cristina Espino.

Samal Mayor Gene dela Fuente said the project was one way of giving tribute to mothers who will be giving birth to future leaders of the town and the country. “Enjoy every bit of experience of being pregnant,” she told mothers.

The mayor said she was giving priority to maternal health care so that all children to be born will be given proper care to make sure that they are healthy.

Dela Fuente said the birthing clinic that they have in the town is comparable to a mini-hospital where hundreds of children are born. She thanked Gov. Albert Garcia for supporting the project.

Similar buntis pageants were first held in Mariveles, Bataan and later in the provincial level.
