CABIAO, Nueva Ecija – The town councilor whose house was attacked with grenade blasts called on police officials for more protection for his family and fellow members of the Sangguniang Bayan (SB).

Nananawagan ako kay PNP (Philippine National Police) Chief Jesus Versoza, para sa aking pamilya at mga kasama, sa aming seguridad,” said Councilor Jomar Wycoco.

He said that while the real motive on the supposed attempt to kill him has yet to be known, he also called on the PNP to also protect other councilmen.

Wycoco said added that while he got no enemies, the Sangguniang Bayan has been unearthing alleged multi-million-peso anomalies in projects reportedly undertaken by the municipal government. “One was the gravelling project from several barangays.”

“Ipinatawag namin ang mga kapitan ng barangay, hindi nila masabi kung saan napunta yung gravel,” he said.

Wycoco is the younger brother of the late National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Dir. Reynaldo Wycoco.

It can be recalled that two hand grenades and a molotov bomb were lobbed onto his house at dawn on Thursday. No one was hurt but his car was full of holes due to shrapnel.

He believed attackers were determined to kill him but the fire came short because of trees in front of his house. The bomb, as well as the grenades, landed about two meters short to the bedroom. His entire family was inside when the attack happened.

No member of the SB has a security detail, he said. Mayor Abundia Garcia has yet to issue comments on the attack.

A town official noted that while Wycoco has no known enemy, no village official has visited the compound until noon time of Thursday.

“Hindi ba unang-unang pupunta ay ang mga opsiyal ng barangay?” the official said. The Wycoco residence is at Barangay San Juan North, Cabiao, Nueva Ecija.

Vice Mayor Mar Simbillo and other councilmen rushed to Wycoco’s house.

Wycoco belong to Bagong Lakas ng Nueva Ecija (Balane) led by First District Rep. Eduardo Nonato Joson while Garcia belongs to Lakas-CMD.

Chief Insp. Benjamin Villasis Jr., provincial chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), said motives as well as suspects behind the attack have yet to be established. He said Wycoco could not name particular suspects yet.

However, he vowed to look into different angles, including personal, family and Wycoco’s official functions.
