BALAGTAS, Bulacan — The price of tomatoes has almost doubled in this town’s public market since last week due to low supply, vendors claimed.
Arnold Pababei, a stall owner, said the tomato price increased to almost 100% from only P80 per kilo to nearly P160 per kilo presently.
He cited the recent typhoons that hit the country as the cause of the low supply of tomatoes.
With the spike in the price, sales have slowed down as consumers shifted to canned tomato sauce instead of the fresh produce, Pababei said.
Marketgoer Marivic De Jesus, on the other hand, said that instead of buying a kilo of tomatoes, she now buys only one-fourth kilo owing to her tight budget.
