ANGELES CITY – Mayoralty aspirant Sec. Edgardo “Ed” Pamintuan has entered into a ‘People’s Covenant” with various sectors here to safeguard the “sanctity of the ballot” in the 2010 elections.
Pamintuan and some 300 members of the Multi-Alliance of Sectors in Angeles (MASA CU) on December 10 signed the covenant “to unify the various sectoral organizations to address the various issues and concerns affecting them and to create a movement that would safeguard not only the sanctity of the votes of the general public but as well as to be a vanguard or watch dog against graft and corruption.”
“It calls upon all of the people to be vigilant and to participate in various spheres of governance,” added the covenant signed by the jeepney drivers organization PASADA, the Federation of Tricycle Operators and Drivers Associations, government employees, the Angeles City Pampang Public Market Vendors Association, ambulant vendors, youth and senior citizens groups, the urban poor, women’s sector, the Muslim community, workers in the informal sector, teachers and barangay officials.
Pamintuan, for his part, said he would vow to “always listen to the voice of the people and that government should emanate from the people.”
Founding MASA CU member Rhowena Celis said that the People’s Covenant signifies “a new beginning in Angeles City politics” and that government should always engage the people in constructive and meaningful dialogues and consultations. She also added that MASA CU will rewrite the history of city politics where the “people are at the core of any development initiatives.” She added that “this event is just the beginning of a series of activities that involve the conduct of dialogues with the various communities or barangays so as to come up with a city development plan that reflects the aspirations and visions of the people.”
Deck Medina, president of MASA CU said that early next year MASA CU plans to conduct a public debate forum among the various candidates. He added that’s “this is a first of its kind in the city since this would be covered by tri-media and would be telecast and broadcast live.”
