Three-cornered fight

NO WAY. Neither did he retreat nor did he surrender.

Contrary to reports filed by Joey Pavia in this paper a while back, telecom mogul Anthony Dee, perennial also-ran to Boking Morales in the Mabalacat mayoralty race, had not decided to step one rung lower in the local political ladder by accepting the vice mayoralty slot in Dr. Victor Tiglao’s 2010 slate.

Dee is not running for vice mayor. Dee is running for mayor. So our sources got it straight from the horse’s mouth. So it is talked about in the whole of Mabalacat.

Absolutely no white flags to hoist for Dee. Never to Boking, even after so many failed tries. No way to Tiglao, whose own try at vice fell short of the prize.

No retreat. No surrender pa rin. Else, matin-Dee  gets totally devoid of meaning.

So expect a three-cornered fight in Mabalacat. This, to the best interest of the voters, now given more options.

The elections are in May next year yet – all of 13 months and a few days from now – but already the campaigning is gaining much steam.

Boking, of course, enjoys the equity of the incumbent in campaign matters. Like appending his name on various projects for people to see that he’s working for their welfare. Like getting invited to all the graduation exercises, from pre-school to college, getting his name, if not his message, in the collective minds of his audiences. Like getting so much media mileage, the mayor being one good news source.

But 2010 is no walk in the park for Boking. Dee, for all his failed bids at the mayorship, is no easy push-over. Neither is Tiglao.

Dee Hwa Leong Colleges and Hospital are prime campaign assets for Dee. Education and health being premium concerns among the electorate.

Then, there is Dee’s fire brigade that has long been tried and tested in responding to emergencies. At every instance of conflagration, the name Dee is emblazoned in the minds not only of the fire victims but even in the common kibitzers’. Sa bilis ng pagresponde, walang tatalo kay Dee. (In quick response, nobody beats Dee). That could make a good campaign blurb.

Tiglao’s being a medical doctor is by itself already a campaign plus-plus. Rare is a doctor who loses in an electoral contest for a local position. Witness Doctors Ric Zalamea and Ruben Maniago, and Romy Taruc earlier, in Angeles City.

Yeah – how stupid for me to miss – Mabalacat’s own Doctor Cati Domingo, the man who dealt Boking his only defeat in 1992!

Run, Tiglao, run. Run, Dee, run. Give Boking a run for his money. This corner sees the odds – even at this early – already even. It’s anybody’s ballgame.

With no odds stacked on any of the candidate’s favor, everything boils down to strategy. The best laid plan, executed best, would spell ultimate victory here.

The green flag is up! There they go!
