BALANGA CITY – The Department of Trade and Industry led the newly-created provincial special task force monitoring in the inspection of public markets to check on the prices of prime commodities in view of the declaration last September 27 by Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of Bataan under a state of calamity.
Yay Lasam, DTI provincial director, informed market stall holders that during this period, automatic price freeze of basic necessities and prime commodities is imposed. “This means that there is an automatic price control and sellers are not allowed to increase their prices,” she said.
She told stall holders that the special monitoring team will make the rounds of markets and other business establishments every day. She reported a stable price on pork and chickens. Price for pork was maintained at P170 a kilo, and for chicken, P140 – P150 per kilo.
There was a slight increase in the price of some vegetables due to loss in production because of the storm but cabbage that cost P45 a kilo Wednesday was sold Thursday at P40.
“Bagsak din ang presyo ng isda at hipon,” sellers said. They cited either lesser demand or oversupply of the products as reasons that made them lower the prices. “Bakoko” priced at P200 before was sold at P180 a kilo; shrimps (swahe) from P300 per kilo down to P280; “sugpo” from P380 to P350 per kilo.
Lasam told the market retailers that should there be an increase in prices, the reasons should be properly analyzed and evaluated. “But definitely during this period when our province is under a state of calamity, there should be no increase in prices of prime and basic commodities,” she emphasized.
Per instruction of Gov. Enrique Garcia, DTI initiated the creation on Thursday of the special monitoring team. The team immediately went to work right after its formation.
It is composed of the DTI, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, Veterinary Office, Provincial Information Office, Provincial Health Team Office/DOH, National Food Authority, City of Balanga Office of Agriculturist, Philippine National Police, City Public Market of Balanga City and Bataan Consumer Affairs Council.
The Provincial Special Task Force Monitoring is expected to act on calamity and emergency situations and as urgently called for by the provincial governor.
