PORAC, Pampanga – The Joint Monitoring Team (JMT) yesterday started inspecting one of the 38 prominent piggeries and poultries here.

The poultry managed by a certain Remyu Chu uses a P7-million bio-gas facility but the Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM) said the anti-pollution facility of Edward Farm “still needs improvement.”

The PGKM is a member of the JMT together with municipal and barangay officials and the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

PGKM Chairman Ruperto “Perto” Cruz said the biodigester facility of the farm releases “dark-colored” waste water.

“It means it still violates the clean-water act and environmental laws,” said Cruz.

The PGKM also noted that the drainage system at the Edward Farm had not been properly closed and shield. “No wonder there is foul smell.”

Chu, for her part, said “they really need to improve the biogas facility and what it releases in the canals.” She added that they “opened their farm to the JMT because they have nothing to hide.”

Chu said they will cover their drainage system “in a few months.”

Councilor Homer David, chairman of the committee on health and sanitation, said the “JMT inspection is vital to his report and recommendation to the mayor.”

“We will recommend the closure of the piggeries which have violations,” he said.

EMB provincial monitoring chief Reynaldo Garcia took samples of the waste water at the Edward Farm. But the PGKM also took samples of their own “to ensure the integrity of the test.”

Councilor Mike Tapang also joined the JMT inspection yesterday. He will join the second inspection set today (December 10).

Tapang intervened when Cruz and Chu had not agreed on the number of persons whom shall be allowed to enter for the inspection. Chu also wanted to prevent reporters from joining the inspection.

However, 10 JMT members and two journalists were allowed to enter the farm.
