STA. RITA, Pamp. – “The festival makes us closer to each other and reminds us to always adhere to hardwork.”

Thus said Mayor Yolly Pineda yesterday as she led the Suman Festival shortly after the start of the Simbang Gabi at the old church in barangay San Vicente here.

Pineda said the festival is on its second year as a “continuation of the Duman Festival” held last December 4.

“The making of suman reminds us of the importance of being patient and we must work long hours if we want to achieve good things in life,” said Pineda in the dialect who grew up in a family which makes suman almost daily.

Pineda led the unveling of the 365-meter long Suman at the town plaza highlighted by street dances, cultural shows and a parade featuring 16-year-old Ritz Ann Riggie Alzul, the first-ever 2010 Mutya Ning Kapampangan produced by Sta. Rita.

Pineda, daughter-in-law of Gov. Lilia Pineda, said many of her people in at least nine villages “are still farmers and these two festivals are significant for them.”

There are a total of 10 barangays here.

“Only in this time of December could we really produce Duman and Suman,” she said.

Andy Alviz, chiarman of the Duman Festival, said the “flowers of the plants which produces Lakatan grow up during December.” Lakatan is one kind of rice which is used in making Duman and Suman.

“No wonder we call it Suman Pasko,” added Alviz, director of the “To be a Priest” musical s show held recently. It will be shown again on Friday  December 17 at the Bren. Z. Guiao Gym.

Felicetas Pineda of barangay Dila-Dila said “gata, lakatan and sugar” are the basic ingredients of a Suman Pasko.

“There are many ways of doing it. But the secret is cooking it long to make it delicious,” said Pineda who cooked her first batch of Suman from 3:30 to 7:30 a.m. on Thursday to ensure its quality and taste.

Pineda said she earns about P400 pesos daily from cooking about five kilos of lakatan.
