BALANGA CITY — SM City Bataan played host to an exciting food festival in partnership with Mesa Restaurant Philippines that featured giant tinapa rice and giant tinapa roll savored for free by 500 mall visitors on Sunday.

The local government unit and the tourism office of Balanga City also shared and participated in the exciting activity that showcased the well-known tinapa (smoked fish) of the city.

SM City Bataan public information officer Paula Gayeta said the supermall came   alive with the vibrant flavor of the Filipino cuisine in the unveiling of the two extraordinary dishes: an 8×8 feet diameter, 100 kilograms of tinapa fried rice and giant tinapa roll.

Gayeta described the giant tinapa fried rice as a dish designed to impress both in size and flavor that is prepared with steamed rice tossed with tinapa flakes, topped with tomatoes, additional tinapa flakes, red salted egg and sprinkled with spring onions.

The giant tinapa roll, on the other hand, features a smoky flaked tinapang bangus with tomato, onion, and salted egg, served with fried kropeck, perfect for sharing.

Gayeta said mallgoers flocked to the festival and 500 visitors sampled these one-of-a-kind dishes, enjoying the festive atmosphere and the acoustic serenade featuring classic OPM Songs. She noted that the food festival not only showcases the rich culinary heritage of Bataan but also emphasizes the importance of supporting local produce and traditions.

Mesa Philippines executive chef John Rey Antonio led the culinary showcase. The Filipino restaurant has a branch in SM City Bataan.

“As we unveil these culinary masterpieces, let us also celebrate the spirit of Balanga – its rich heritage, and its vibrant culture, and its people who continue to keep our traditions alive,” enthused assistant mall manager Marbie Kaneko.

“Foodie Festival is part of SM’s ongoing commitment to bringing unique and engaging experiences to the community, highlighting local flavors and the talents of Filipino chefs. As Bataeños savor each bite, the festival serves as a reminder of the richness of the local food culture and the joy of sharing a good meal with family and friends,” Kaneko added.
