CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The San Fernando Electric Light and Power Company (SFELAPCO) is set to begin relocating electric lines along key parts of this capital city in support of the government’s ongoing North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) project.
In a statement released this week, SFELAPCO announced that excavations will commence in about three weeks to transfer overhead power lines underground, clearing the way for railway construction spearheaded by the Department of Transportation.
Five areas have been identified for excavation and cable-laying: St. Dominic Subdivision in Barangay Dolores, Capitol Boulevard in Barangay Sto. Niño, two locations in Barangay Sta. Lucia, and another in Barangay San Pedro Viejo. According to SFELAPCO spokesperson Atty. Cathy Diaz, the underground cable works may take two to three months, while full completion of the relocation project could extend up to six months.
“We seek the indulgence of the public to bear with us during the construction phase. But rest assured that the SFELAPCO teams will do their best to fast track the work and minimize public inconvenience,” Diaz said.
Minor traffic disruptions are expected in the affected areas during excavation and installation. However, SFELAPCO assured that electric service in the city will remain largely unaffected.
“While the underground cables are being laid, the present power lines will still be energized. Transfer of load will be done later when all construction works are completed,” Diaz explained.
The NSCR Project is a long-planned government initiative to modernize and reconnect northern Luzon provinces to Metro Manila via a high-capacity railway system.
Originally launched as the Northrail project in the early 2000s, the project aims to improve transportation infrastructure, reduce travel time, and boost economic activity across South, Central and Northern Luzon.
The NSCR is part of the current administration’s push for large-scale infrastructure development, under the “Build Better More” program.
The project covers the construction of a railway line from Calamba, Laguna to Tutuban in Manila to Clark in Pampanga, with several stops along key urban centers including the City of San Fernando.
