THE FORT, Taguig – “We continue to be the premiere leisure airline in the country.”

Thus said Patrick Tan, vice president for community affairs of South East Asian Airlines (SEAIR), as their firm celebrated its 15th anniversary here on Saturday. SEAIR vowed to acquire bigger planes to reach more destinations in Asia.

Tan disclosed that they are planning to buy 48-seater planes or bigger to beef up their 32-seater and 19-seater planes which regularly fly to 14 top tourist destinations in the Philippines.

The new planes will open new destinations to Singapore, Macau, Hongkong and Thailand via the Clark airport, he added.

Tan said their company – which is the second oldest airline in the country – will be ‘very much around” in the next five years despite the past and predicted global economic crisis which severely hit the airline industry over the past years.

Tan said they were the first airline company to use the runway of the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) in Clark for commercial purposes after it was left by the American military forces in 1991. He added that SEAIR uses Clark as its base for its operations.

Tan was with SEAIR President and CEO Avelino Zapanta during the anniversary celebration.

Founded by Iren Dornier, Nikos Gitsis and Tomas Lopez in 1995, SEAIR now has 10 planes, most of which are German-made Dornier 328. It started with two nine-seater planes and an investment of P2 million pesos.

SEAIR flies four times a week to Caticlan via Clark.

The airline company reached a milestone in 2008 when it launched its first-ever international flight to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia via the Manila airport.

They also fly to El Nido in Palawan, Basco in Batanes, Cebu, Manila, Tablas in Romblon, Marinduque, San Fernando in La Union, Zamboanga, Jolo and Taw-tawi.

SEAIR, which has 150 employees, has two sophisticated hangers in Clark and offices in Manila and Cebu.
