ANGELES CITY – Councilor Jay Sangil is urging Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan to close and stop piggeries and poultries here especially those in barangay Cutcut from operating.
“I’m not talking politics here, consider me as an affected concerned citizen. This is about our health especially that of our children,” Sangil told Punto Central Luzon.
This after environmental and business groups led by the Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM) asked the city council and the Pamintuan administration to end the stench problem here.
Sangil, who lives in barangay Sto. Domingo (a kilometer away from barangay Cutcut), said environmental and other permits will not justify the foul smell “obviously emanating from the piggery and poultry of the Nepomucenos.” The PGKM earlier tagged the Nepomucenos as the alleged polluters in the city.
Sangil also backed PGKM chairman Ruperto Cruz’s claim that cases of miscarriage and respiratory illnesses have increased in areas where poultry and piggery operate.
Cruz also noted that more blue babies are born in the same areas affected by the stench.
Sangil reiterated his call to exhaust all legal actions against polluters saying that “the health of our children is at stake here.”
Commuters and motorists who often pass along Rizal Extension in Cutcut have also complained the stench.
“Halos gabi-gabi kaming dumadaan dito at kahit nakasara na at naka-aircon na kami tumatagos parin ang baho. Kawawa naman ang mga nakatira dito,” they said.
Pamintuan earlier said that he will be giving at least seven days to piggery and poultry owners in Cutcut to comply with the necessary permits and to get rid of the stench. “Otherwise, we will not renew their business permits.”
In a text message Pamintuan said he is just waiting for findings and recommendation of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
‘We follow due process, then I will act as soon as possible. I may revoke business permit if they are found violating and not compliant of DENR rule,” he said.
Pamintuan also cited the case of the gas leak in Makati City where the DENR slapped a daily penalty against the company. “Why can’t DENR/EMS slap a fine if they found the piggeries and chicken farm violating stench pollution?”
