SAMAL, Bataan – This agricultural town on Monday started celebrating its 373rd founding anniversary with a Holy Mass and a colourful and long parade.
The Senakulista of Samal who staged a street play on the Passion of Christ last Good Friday lent color to the parade participated in by big delegations from all sectors in 14 barangays.
There were middle-aged women in Filipiniana, teenaged boys and girls in Sinulog and Ati-atihan attires, local beauties in the “Search for Miss Samal” in flower-decked floats and the eye-catching bahay-kubo float. “We have lined up day-to-day activities with our celebration to culminate with serenata and fi reworks display on April 30,” Mayor Gene Malibiran dela Fuente said. She was stunning in Filipiniana.
Other activities readied were cooking contest, separate nights of presentations for Roman Catholics, Aglipayans and people’s organizations, Mr & Miss Body Shots and Search for Miss Samal. Samal was founded as a municipality under patron Saint Catherine of Sienna on April 20, 1641.
The Church of Samal is the second oldest church, next to Abucay’s, in Bataan. It has preserved images of saints counting centuries old.
