MALOLOS CITY—This is good news for farmers not only in Bulacan but in Pampanga as well.

The 10-day rescue allocation for irrigation granted by the National Resources Board  (NWRB) from September 29 to October 8 has been extended to October 17.

The NWRB also made assurance that they will see to it that local farmers will have enough allocation for irrigation in the second cropping season.

Governor Wilhelmino Alvarado made the announcement on Thursday as he clarified that agriculture is also covered by the declaration of state of calamity in the province.

That means that more assistance of will be given to farmers in terms of seeds, water pumps and fertilizers.

“Humingi pa tayo ng dagdag na alokasyon sa patubig for 10-days at ibinigay naman nila,” Alvarado said.

He added that the NWRB also vowed to secure allocation for irrigation in the second cropping season which will cover the months of November, December until February and March next year.

Alvarado also told NWRB that they will impose the provision of the local government code which says that no government agency can implement any major project or program without coordination with the local chief executive.

This means that though Alvarado is not a member of the NWRB, he will be invited and will be part of planning meeting for the water allocation from the Angat Dam in the future.

Earlier, Alvarado along with Rep. Ana York Bondoc of Pampanga’s district 4 sought audience with the NWRB and asked for emergency allocation for irrigation was granted for 10 days.

Farmers smelled initial victory, but realized that the 10-day rescue allocation was not enough.

They said that initial 10-day allocation is a good sign that they will have enough water soon, although many of them stressed that the 10-day rescue allocation is not enough.

Some of them even asked fellow farmers not to plant rice yet to allow farmers whose rice crops are on flowering stage to have enough water that will sustain their crops.

The insufficient rescue allocation led to another dialog with the NWRB for a 10 days extension which was granted until October 17.
