OLONGAPO CITY- “Hindi pwedeng istorbuhin, marami siyang ginagawa”, this was what one Officer Rubio of the Olongapo City District Jail told this reporter when he sought to interview jail warden Supt. Alberto Balauag on the alleged riot between the Sputnik Gang and Jail Management operatives Wednesday morning.

The inmates started a noise barrage to protest the alleged abuses committed by officers of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) assigned at the Olongapo City District Jail and to oppose the impending transfer of the leader of Sputnik Gang Boyet Lagonero to the Dinalupihan District Jail in Bataan.

The noise barrage turned violent when the inmates began destroying the security fence and door of their detention cell, forcing the jail guards to fire their guns in different directions hitting two inmates, Lito Mendoza and Joel Avilda.

The jail management allegedly had not taken any action even as the two suspects, JO1 Jeremiah Natuno and JO1 Boyet Lupao who were identified by the victims as those who fired their guns remained in their custody.

The guns used by the jail guards, caliber 45 pistols, have not been turned  over to proper authorities for ballistic examinations.

Relatives of the inmates who asked for anonymity said “dapat magkaroon ng katarungan ang pagkakabaril ng dalawang preso, nasa loob na sila ng piitan binaril pa na parang hayop, kaya nananawagan kami sa human rights commission.”
