Renewal

    IT HAS been my practice to view anniversaries not only as milestones to celebrate but occasions for renewal and recommitment.

    Thus, every June 17, I renew my marital vows with and recommit myself to Mary Dorothy; every February 10, I go on a spiritual rebirth, if only to get much closer to my God.

    So, what is there for me on this the second anniversary of Punto!  but to renew my commitment to the Code of my profession, this the Credo of the Pampanga Press Club which I helped craft so many years ago. Thus:

    I believe that Journalism, be it print or broadcast, is a calling – an instrument for public good.

    I believe that as a career, its practitioner can ennoble himself by elevating its standard to a level worthy of public esteem and respect.

    I believe that Journalism imposes in the practitioner the total commitment to Truth, Justice, Fairness, and Freedom as well as the protection of human rights.

    In adherence to the above beliefs, I now solemnly swear:

    • to uphold at all times the noble ideals of Journalism and to live its Code of Ethics as embodied in the Constitution and By-Laws of the Pampanga Press Club;

    • to fulfill the duties assigned to me by the Constitution of the Pampanga Press Club as well as to promote its objectives;

    • to work for unity and harmony among legitimate media persons covering the province of Pampanga as well as expose irregularities of misfits masquerading as mediamen;

    • to consecrate my time and resources in the pursuit of public welfare, personal and professional development, and in the exercise of a just and honest livelihood; and,

    • to become an instrument for the total development and promotion of progress in Pampanga and its environs.

    With the help of the Almighty God, I vow my sacred honor to defend the cause of press freedom, promote the interest of the Pampanga Press Club and fulfill my obligations as a journalist to the community.

    So help me God.

    Recommitted to the Code, I take to heart anew, what I have long considered the very article of faith of every journalist, as articulated by Joseph Pulitzer, to wit:

    “A free press should always fight for progress and reform,

    never tolerate injustice or corruption,

    always fight demagogues of all parties,

    never belong to any party,

    always oppose privileged classes and public plunderers,

    never lack sympathy for the poor,

    always remain devoted to the public welfare.”

    Banat!
