Fusing heritage and innovation, the Kuliat Foundation proudly launched the Barong Kapampangan 2.0 Repurpose Workshop. The event is dedicated to breathing new life into the iconic Barong Tagalog.
Spearheading this pioneering event is none other than Most Outstanding Kapampangan awardee and celebrated fashion designer Philip D. Torres, founder of Pidayit House of Fashion, known for his masterful weaving of Kapampangan identity into contemporary couture.
Held at the Museo ning Angeles, the workshop gathered fashion enthusiasts, heritage advocates, and creatives eager to learn how to preserve and transform traditional barongs into modern, wearable art.
Through hands-on sessions, participants were guided by Torres on innovative techniques to repurpose heirloom barongs without losing their cultural essence.
“This isn’t just about fashion…it’s about honoring stories, memories, and craftsmanship embedded in every thread. Incorporating the Pidayit spirit is about transforming tradition into a living, evolving expression of identity,” said Torres.
The workshop was made possible through the cultural initiative of Carmen McTavish, past president of the Kuliat Foundation, whose vision to reintroduce local heritage to younger generations through sustainable and creative means continues to shape the city’s cultural scene.
With this groundbreaking event, the Barong Kapampangan 2.0 Repurpose Workshop not only elevates Kapampangan fashion but also challenges the boundaries of heritage conservation, proving that tradition, when placed in the hands of premier artists like Philip Torres, can be both preserved and reinvented.
