MALOLOS CITY – Night-long rain drench parch lands and provided relief to Bulakenyos on Wednesday night, but it hardly increased water elevation at the Angat Dam that supplies 97 percent of  Metro Manila’s potable water requirement.

Intermittent rains started falling around 9 p.m. but heavier downpour followed through out the night.

In some areas like in barangay Look 1st here, irrigation canals even swelled, but receded as day break came.

In Hagonoy, Paombong, Guiguinto, and Bulakan towns, streets were briefly flooded.

Farmers on the other hands said that Wednesday night rainfall was beneficial for land preparation and for some standing crops that greatly need irrigation since the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) totally cut allocation for agriculture since April 13.

Liza Sacdalan, a farmer leader from Plaridel town however, noted that the rain was not enough to sustain some standing crops.

But for local residents, the rain was enough for relief from long dry spell being experience since the start of the year.

“Nakaramdam din kami ng konting ginhawa, sobrang init,” said Nards Gomez, a local businessman here.

This developed, the rains didn’t increase water elevation at the giant Angat Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan.

Records showed that the water elevation at the dam further dropped to 176.69 meters yesterday 8 a.m. This is lower that the 1976.94 meters recorded on the same time a day earlier.

A National Power Corporation (Napocor) official said that it hardly rained in the watershed on Wednesday night.

Napocor owns the 246-megawatt Angat River Hydro Electric Power Plant and manages the Angat Dam that supplies 97 percent of potable water requirement to Metro manila and irrigation water to Bulacan and Pampanga farmlands.

They noted that lack of inflow showed less rain fall within the 63,000 hectare watershed.

The last rain fall experienced in the province was on the second week of March.  It was followed by a drizzle within the watershed on the last week of the same month.
