In observance of Fire Prevention Month this March, the Department of Trade and Industry – Region 3 (DTI-3) reminds consumers and businesses to prioritize fire safety by ensuring that fire-related products meet quality and safety standards.
With the increasing risk of fire incidents during the dry season, DTI-3 urges the public to purchase only certified fire extinguishers, electrical products, and appliances to prevent potential hazards. Consumers are advised to check for the Philippine Standard (PS) mark or the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) sticker, which indicate that products have passed safety regulations.
DTI-3 Regional Director Edna D. Dizon underscores the importance of buying fire extinguishers and electrical products only from establishments with a valid Philippine Standard (PS) License or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Certificate.
“The PS License and ICC Certificate serve as assurance that manufacturers and importers adhere to the Philippine National Standards (PNS). These certifications guarantee product quality, reliability, and safety, giving consumers confidence that they are using effective fire prevention tools,” said RD Dizon.
As part of its consumer protection mandate, DTI-3 continuously monitors the market to ensure compliance with safety standards, preventing the circulation of substandard and potentially hazardous products. The agency also conducts regular surveillance and enforcement activities, working to safeguard the public against defective or uncertified fire-related equipment.
“Fire safety begins with awareness and action. By choosing certified products and implementing preventive measures, we can collectively protect our homes, businesses, and communities from fire-related dangers,” Dizon emphasized.
For concerns about substandard fire safety products, the public is encouraged to report to DTI-3 through its Consumer Protection Division or visit the Regional and Provincial offices.
