CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Potluck, packed lunch.
Such will be the fare for Pres. Arroyo’s inaugural as congresswoman in ceremonies slated at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center here soon after turning over the presidency to president-elect Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino at noon this June 30.
“There will be no fanfare and it will not be a solo oathtaking. All elected provincial officials and mayors from Pampanga will take their oath of office simultaneously,” governor-elect Lilia Pineda, a close friend of Mrs. Arroyo, told Punto!.
Pineda initially balked at giving out details on the President’s oath-taking here, but relented when told that outgoing Presidential Management Staff head Elena Bautista-Horn had already disclosed that Mrs. Arroyo would be heading straight to Pampanga after bringing Aquino to the Quirino Grandstand in Manila for his inaugural on June 30.
Pineda said the President, who would be Congresswoman Arroyo past 12 noon of June 30, is expected to arrive at the Guiao Sports Complex by about 1 p.m.
Mrs. Arroyo and other local officials, including her, will take their oath before Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Eduardo Nachura. “We don’t have a Kapampangan justice in the Supreme Court,” Pineda noted.
Almost all local officials who were elected in Pampanga last May 10 are all political supporters of the President, including Pineda’s daughter Mylene who was elected Mayor of Lubao and her daughter-in-law Yolanda who was reelected Mayor of Sta. Rita.
Pineda said that all the local officials had agreed to potluck and packed lunch for their oath-taking fare at the sports complex. “The mayors will bring enough food packs for their parties. All food fare will be packed lunch,” she noted.
She also said that Mrs. Arroyo is expected to head back to her home at La Vista after the oath-taking. “It’s a holiday on June 30 so I suppose she would head back home to take care of Kuya Mike (First Gentleman Mike Arroyo) who underwent spinal surgery only recently,” she added.
Pineda also said that the President would give up the small office that her son, Rep. Mikey Arroyo, maintained in downtown Guagua. “I think she will use for office her small apartment at the back of the shrine,” she said, referring to the rehabilitated nipa hut where Mrs. Arroyo’s father, former Pres. Diosdado Macapagal, was born in Barangay San Nicolas. The hut is now a memorial shrine.
The convention center here is part of the Guiao Sports Complex, named after the late Gov. Bren Z. Guiao, who was once jailed with incoming President Aquino’s father, the late Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr, during the Marcos administration. The late governor was also close to former Pres. Corazon Aquino who made him acting Pampanga governor in 1986.
The late governor’s son, Vice Gov. Joseller “Yeng” Guiao, was reelected vice governor under Pineda’s party, but had campaigned for the incoming president in the last polls.
