APALIT, Pampanga – “Men of wealth are envied. Men of power are feared. But men of character are trusted.”

Thus said Angelo Edward Buan Parras, top Philippine Military Academy (PMA) graduate, as he quoted his valedictory speech during the testimonial dinner for him Tuesday night here hosted by Mayor Oscar “Jun” Tetangco.

Parras of Barangay San Juan here said “groups should not be judged as a whole.” He was referring corruption charges against members of the military officers exposed in the recent Senate hearings.

“One should not be affected by what other people say about them. They should just do what they feel is right,” said Parras, who left the University of the Philippines-Diliman to join the PMA in Baguio City.

Gov. Lilia “Baby” Pineda said “young people should imitate Parras who made us in Pampanga very proud.”

Tetangco, for his part, said “the Parras family were not just the one honored but us in Apalit.”

Apolinario Parras, father of the 22-year-old PMA graduate who topped the Laon-Alab class of 2011, urged his son “to imitate the good officers of the military.”

He disclosed that Parras had at least three relatives who earlier joined the Armed Forces of the Philippines graduating in the PMA.

Elma, mother of Parras who owns a sari-sari store in front of the municipal hall, said “power of prayer helped his son to be successful.”

For his part, Vice Governor Joseller “Yeng’ Guaio said “the measure of men is how they raised their child.” He praised the Parras couple.

The eldest among six children, Parras received 12 other academic awards including the Jusmag Award for the Navy.
