CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – “I am not in a hurry to assume my post but we have to respect the rule of law.”

Thus said Governor-elect Lilia “Nanay Baby” Pineda yesterday as her lawyers filed a writ of execution before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc. Just before the May 10 elections, the Comelec en banc affirmed the victory of Pineda against Panlilio in the 2007 polls.  In filing the writ of execution, Pineda’s lawyer seeks to install her as governor last month.

However, Pineda handily defeated Panlilio in the last May 10 automated elections.

“Let’s respect the decision of the half a million Kapampangans who exercised their right to suffrage. They have already spoken through their votes. The important thing now is to work together to uplift the lives of the Pampangueños through a new leadership,” Pineda said in a statement.

Atty. George Irwin Garcia, legal counsel of Pineda, filed before the Comelec en banc a writ of execution “as a matter of practice.”

Garcia said they filed the writ of execution as a “procedural move so as not to weaken the case filed by the other party in the Supreme Court.”

Pineda beat Panlilio by 246,154, getting 488,521 votes in the May 10 polls over the governor’s 242,367. More than 9,479 votes were cast for independent third gubernatorial candidate Ricardo Ocampo Sr. of Mexico town.

Pineda, for her part, said she respects the legal process of the recount and whatever the decision of the Supreme Court on her case.

“If the Supreme Court decides that I assume the governorship, then I will do it, because I respect their decision. I do not want to be charged for dereliction of duty,” Pineda said.

She also said that if and when she assumes the governorship as per the decision of the Supreme Court, then this can be considered as a transition period in preparation for her installation as Pampanga governor on June 30.

“Let’s not talk about the past (referring to the 2007 polls) and just respect the decision of the High Court,” Pineda said.

According to Pineda, the focus of her administration will be on implementing the programs and projects that she promised her Cabalens during the campaign.

“These programs and projects will be implemented during my first 100 days as governor of Pampanga,” Pineda said.

Meanwhile, Panlilio’s lawyer, Sixto Brillantes, said he would file a petition before the high court “to accord Among Ed (Panlilio) due process.”

Punto tried but failed to get Panlilio’s side.
