CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Gov. Lilia “Nanay Baby” Pineda will distribute next week at least 21 brand-new dump trucks to Pampanga mayors as part of her project to drastically cut the problem on solid waste.

In a phone interview on Thursday, Pineda said the trucks worth some 1.9 million each will be used to carry the segregated waste of the respective Local Government Units (LGU) to the sanitary landfill in Capas, Tarlac.

There are 20 towns and one component city in the province.

Pineda said she had asked the mayors led by Pampanga Mayors League (PML) president Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo to “do their part by establishing reliable Material Recovery Facility (MRF)” in their respective areas.

“I can’t do all the work. They must help me,” said Pineda in the dialect.

“Some towns have small trucks making them spend more when transporting garbage to Capas. A big truck will make them save more,” she added.

Fourth District Board Ric Yabut, assistant chairman of the provincial board’s committee on environment, said “clustering of barangays” should be implemented to effectively collect garbage in the province with 504 barangays.

Yabut said the number of MRFs should depend on the “size of the town and the volume of garbage the residents produce.”

He said garbage should be segregated at source to reduce the volume of waste thrown at the landfill of the Metro Clark Waste Management Corporation (MCWMC). The MCWMC charges P800 per metric ton.

Angeles City, the independent highly urbanized city of Pampanga, is charged P500 per metric ton after it entered an agreement  with the MCWMC to throw at least 200 metric tons per day, it was learned.

Earlier, the MCWMC, who operates the Kalangitan Landfill in Capas town, proposed a P202-million fee a year from the provincial government for the use of private firm’s garbage collection and hauling system.

The proposal will engage the services of MCWMC to provide waste collection, hauling and sanitary waste disposal facility services for a guaranteed tonnage of 735 metric tons per day. It will include garbage generated by the province’s 20 municipalities and one city.

The MCWMC will collect generated solid waste and non-toxic waste, hospital and healthcare waste.

As per record, the province’s daily waste generation per town and per metric ton include: Apalit, 50; Arayat, 60: Bacolor, 13; Candaba, 49; Floridablanca, 53; Guagua, 53; Lubao, 73; Macabebe, 36; Magalang, 50; Masantol, 26; Mexico, 72; Minalin, 21; Porac, 53; San Luis, 24; San Simon, 25; Sta. Ana, 25; Sta. Rita, 19; Sto. Tomas, 19; and Sasmuan, 16.

No details are provided for Mabalacat and this city.
