CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Gov. Lilia “Baby” Pineda yesterday ordered the investigation of the massive fish kill at the Pampanga River over the weekend, instructing the Sangguniang Panlalawigan’s environment committee chair to conduct a hearing on the case.

Pineda personally witnessed the tons of dead fish floating along Pampanga River on her way to the two coastal barangays in Masantol town for a medical mission last April 30.

The governor ordered Fourth District Board Member Nestor Tolentino, SP chair of the environment committee, to conduct a hearing immediately with the concerned barangay and municipal officials, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and other concerned agencies of the government.

Pineda expressed alarm and dismay on the apparent lack of action on the part of other local government units.

“Gusto kong malaman ang tunay na dahilan kung bakit lumulutang ang daan-daang patay na isda at kung ano ang ginagawa ng mga lokal na opisyal,” Pineda said.

“Lalong lumalala ang polusyon ng Pampanga River sanhi ng mga patay na isda at mga sari-saring basurang itinatapon dito.” she added.

Bernie Guevarra, president of Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) in Masantol town, said the floating dead fish were killed by the “sudsud”, an implement used by the locals in catching fish and were thrown back into the river by the fishermen.

Meanwhile, Pineda spearheaded the delivery of much needed medical services to barangay folks of Balibago and Palimpi, two coastal areas of Masantol town.

“Pineda did not mind the 20-minute banca ride and the six-kilometer rough road travel under the sweltering heat of the midday sun to bring similar services of her medical consultants and medicines from barangay Balibago to barangay Palimpi,” said Board Member Yabut.

Hundreds of residents in the said barangays benefited from the medical mission as they expressed their gratitude to the governor for personally bringing to their far-flung communities the said services, he added.

“Kahit malayo, naabutan ang aming barangay ng serbisyo ng Kapitolyo,” one resident was heard saying as she added that “pati ang gobernador ay hindi nag-atubiling puntahan kami dito”.

The provincial capitol team traveled all the way to Calumpit in the nearby province of Bulacan to reach barangay Balibago in Masantol town, a proof of the sincerity and commitment of the officials to bring the government services to far flung communities in Pampanga, a statement from the governor said.
