ORION, Bataan — This town is almost ready for the operation of the first centralized material recovery facility (MRF) in the country in the treatment of garbage, the municipal government announced Friday.

Mayor Antonio Raymundo said that the project, with a funding of P50 million, will rise in the former landfill in the upland village of General Lim,

“We are prepared for zero waste management under a Singaporean technology that will be the first in the Philippines. It will be operational during the last quarter of this year,” Raymundo said.

He said that the building construction that will house machineries and other facilities was almost completed while the acquisition of equipment was already bid out.

Under the system, proper garbage segregation will be employed. Wastes will be grouped into non-biodegradable and biodegradable. Non-biodegradables will be burned under an eco-friendly way to dispose waste while biodegradables will be turned into compost

Raymundo said the project can process 50 tons of wastes per day out of the town’s daily disposal of 30 tons. The mayor said Senator Manny Pacquiao has shown interest in the technology and will wait for the result of operation in Orion for possible establishment in other parts of the country.

Municipal workers and other sectors in Orion will undertake tree planting in the area on Saturday.
