CANDABA, Pampanga – With the start of the rainy season, Mayor Jerry Pelayo and his people are bracing themselves for the perennial floods that swamp their town.

Pelayo said on Friday that the town’s “improved major dikes” such as the Maasim dike will be put to test. He added that at least three dikes, including Pasig, are expected to drastically limit the effects of floods.

“We are confident that they will stand the tests,” said Pelayo in a phone interview.

Studies say this municipality is flood-prone because of its being the lowest point in Central Luzon.

Pelayo said that should the dikes fail to stop floods the twon’s disaster preparedness group “is ready and well-equipped.”

“They are available 24 hours a day,” said Pelayo. He could not give the exact number of members in the group because “even the barangay officials and police are included.”

Pelayo said he had “learned from the past and applied new ways to help them during floods.” He added that he had also improved the evacuation centers in the town, most of which are public offices.
