MAGALANG, Pampanga – “Normal” operations at the municipal hall here resumed yesterday when former Mayor Lyndon Cunanan peacefully yielded his post and left the mayor’s office late Wednesday night.
This was according to supporters of businessman Romulo “Romy” Pecson who took over as mayor after Branch 58 Angeles City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Irin Zenaida Buan issued a writ of execution on May 12. The order was implemented by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Wednesday but was delayed when Cunanan and his loyal supporters holed themselves up at the mayor’s office.
DILG official Angie Blanco came late Wednesday afternoon and was able to convince Cunanan to step down peacefully.
Blanco reportedly allowed Cunanan to leave his office at around midnight on the same day so that he could transfer his personal belongings.
A certain Nat, who answered the phone at the mayor’s office, said Pecson was scheduled to report to work yesterday at about 3 p.m. He added that Pecson’s initial move was to make an inventory.
Pecson and Cunanan both turned their cell phones off yesterday and could not be reached for their respective comments.
It could be recalled that Pecson was able to sit as mayor for about two months about the same time last year but was removed in June.
