TARLAC CITY – National Capital Region (NCR) elementary boys players Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar and Giovanni “Gio” Mejia defeated Cagayan Valley led by Jerico Cacal and Alder Baldwin Jallorina, respectively to remain on top after the second round of the Palarong Pambansa chess competition here on Tuesday.
Baltazar, a student of F.G. Calderon Integrated School in Manila downed Cacal after 30 moves of English Opening using the black pieces on board 1. Mejia, the pride of La Salle Greenhills in Mandaluyong, prevailed over Jallorina after 29 moves of Center Counter Games handling the white pieces on board 2.
The twin victories of Baltazar and Mejia gave them a total of 4 points in the elementary boys’ competition here at the Aquino Center, Hacienda Luisita, here.
The duo (Baltazar and Mejia) also defeated Lanz Renuel Otero and John Kenneth Bayot of Western Visayas in the first round on Monday.
Rey Yaon of the Calamba Chess Club said a total of 136 chess players from 17 regions joined the prestigious annual competition.
After the second round, Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association (CLRAA) takes the lead with 4 points followed by Calabarzon, 3.5 points, and NCR, 3 points.
Loraine Salinas and Judith Pineda of Central Luzon defeated Janelle Mae Frayna and Loradel Dematera of Bicol in the first round then toppled Brena Mae and Merlene Membrere of Ilocos Region in the second round.
In the elementary girls’ division, Maria Ysabelle Joyce Semillano clustered his second straight win after beating Hannah Joyce Amoncio of Davao.
However, team-mate Jesca Docena lost to Ella Grace Moulic.
Semillano bested Angela Camano while Docena downed Gwen Atayra to complete shut-out victory of NCR against Bicol Region in the first round.
After two rounds of play, both NCR and Calabarzon tallied a total 3 points apiece.
Calabarzon top gunner Marie Antoinette San Diego defeated Renaisan Mamac of Central Visayas while team mate Christina Medenilla bowed to Gleneth Dunyen Calacar.
Calabarzon blanked CAR (Cordillera Administrative Region) in the opening round. San Diego nipped Love Joy Taguinay on board 1 while Medenilla outplayed Kaissa Ancheta on board 2.
In the high school boys’ division, NCR’s Ahvix Alfonso and Franz Robert Grafil defeated Romark Ramones and Reynald Joseph Navarrete of Cagayan Valley, respectively.
