P6-M fish trading hub opens

LUBAO, Pampanga — Fisherfolk and residents of Barangay Baruya here rejoiced Wednesday with the inauguration of a P6-million community fi sh landing center (CFLC).

A project of the Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Region 3 under its Targeted Actions to Reduce Poverty and Generate Economic Transformation in the Fishery Sector Program, the CFLC was established in partnership with the Lubao municipal administration of Mayor Mylyn Pineda-Cayabyab who provided the site of the center.

BFAR said construction of the center amounted to P3.3 million while P2.7 million was allocated for the purchase of four freezers and other equipment.

Aimed to “improve the socio-economic welfare of the fisherfolk sector and promote the sustainability of aquatic resources,” the CFLC will primarily “serve as a hub for landing and trading of fish and other seafood products.”

It will also function as a “training center for (processing of) fish and other seafood products, value-adding, and conservation and protection of fishery resources.”

Toward that purpose, the CFLC will be furnished with post-harvest equipment and tools to enable fisherfolk to preserve the good quality of their fish and fishery products, which they could sell for a higher price, BFAR said.

A livelihood seminar on ”tinapa” (smoked fish) making has been slated at the CFLC on May 22 With the CFLC in full operation, BFAR said comes the socio-economic uplift of the fisherfolk, even as consumers will have better access to safe and quality fishery commodities.
