PILAR, Bataan- A completed report on Wednesday on the damage wrought by typhoon “Ondoy”  showed an estimated production loss in rice cultivation in Bataan by more than P10 million. Heavy rains and medium-strength winds affected the rice crops in various stages of growth.

Provincial agriculturist Imelda Inieto said the rains and the winds affected rice crops in the towns of Hermosa, Orani, Samal, Abucay, Pilar, Bagac, Dinalupihan and Limay with total area of about 4,000 hectares.

Hardest hit were  more than 216 hectares of land in Pilar, considered the rice granary of the province.

Agriculture field technicians Godofredo Bautista and Beverly Bantiles showed the extent of damage brought about by the rains and the winds triggered by “Ondoy” to rice crops in their maturity, reproductive and vegetative stages and even to those newly-transplanted ones.

Hectares and hectares of maturing palay were seen lodged in mud.  “Dumapa ang malapit nang aanihing palay na dahil sa lakas ng hangin ay napagpag at nalugas ang maraming butil,” the technicians said.

On palay that are still green and merely on the reproductive stage, the winds forced the plants to untimely bear grains. “Parang babaing buntis na hindi pa panahon ng panganganak pero na-strees kaya napanganak na,: Bautista explained of the plants that bore grains by force of the strong winds.

Some newly-transplanted rice seedlings were on stages of decay and have to be planted again. In all the stages of growth of the riceplants that were damaged by the typhoon meant additional expenses for the poor farmers, the agriculturist said.

Also destroyed by the strong water current brought  by heavy rains was a portion of the irrigation dike in Pilar that created  a deep canal and breached a segment of the ricefields.
