ZARAGOZA, Nueva Ecija – Two persons who reportedly tried to run away from cops manning an anti-criminality checkpoint were arrested for transport of P1.1-million worth of undocumented cigarettes in Barangay Sto. Rosario Young here at about 4:30 p.m., Oct. 14.
Col. Richard Caballero, officer-in-charge of the Nueva Ecija Police Provincial Office, identified the suspects as Garry de Guzman of Barangay Baldios, Sta. Ignacia, Tarlac and Benboy Alania of Sta. Monica, Novaliches, Quezon City.
Seized from the suspects were 92 boxes of different brands of cigarettes with an estimated value of P1,100,000 loaded in a van (NDG 3210).
Investigation disclosed that a composite team of policemen from the town police and the 1st provincial mobile field force flagged down the van “but the driver ignored the checkpoint,” prompting the lawmen to give them a chase.
“The driver and his helper failed to present documents for the said contraband,” Caballero said.
Charges of violation of RA 9211 or the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 were leveled against the suspects, police said.
