CABANATUAN CITY (PIA) — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a 191-square meter multipurpose building at Maugat Elementary School in San Antonio, Nueva Ecija.

The agency repurposed the building to accommodate 120 pupils amid a classroom shortage.

DPWH Nueva Ecija 2nd District Engineer Robert Jay Panaligan explained that the new structure replaces the old building, which had half-concrete walls and wooden partitions.

These materials caused significant damage to students’ learning materials due to termite infestations.

“The one-story, two-classroom facility, elevated by one meter and constructed with full concrete and metal, ensures stronger foundations, better protection against pests and potential floodwaters, providing a safer, more conducive learning environment for students,” Panaligan added.

OIC-Assistant District Engineer Leonora Cruz underscored the importance of the new building in supporting quality education.

She stressed that safe and sufficient structures are crucial for fostering a productive educational setting.

Grade 6 Teacher Alberto Don Cruz II expressed his gratitude, noting the building’s features, including comfort rooms, a ramp for persons with disabilities, new blackboards, wall fans, and lighting fixtures.

He said these additions create a welcoming space that allows students to concentrate on their studies.

DPWH implemented the P4.9-million project under its Basic Infrastructure Program, funding it through the 2024 national budget. (CLJD/RPQ, PIA Region 3-Nueva Ecija)
