CABANATUAN CITY (PIA) — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a two-phase, 206.6-lineal meter flood control structure along the Rio Chico River in Guimba, Nueva Ecija.

Located in Barangay Macamias, the infrastructure enhances protection for the community by safeguarding residents and properties from potential flooding.

DPWH Nueva Ecija 1st OIC-District Engineer Jun Vana emphasized the initiative’s role in mitigating local flood risks, protecting residents and properties, and sustaining farmlands by reducing the impact of recurring floods.

“The first phase of the project involved the construction of a 79-lineal meter river wall, followed by an additional 127.5 lineal meters in the second phase,” Vana explained.

The structure stands on steel sheet piles and features reinforcement with a concrete coping and gabions to ensure structural integrity.

It is expected to enhance flood resilience, particularly for communities along the riverbanks.

The agency funded the project with a P47.8 million allocation from the 2024 national budget, strengthening flood protection for residents and farmlands in the village. (CLJD/RPQ, PIA Region 3-Nueva Ecija)
