SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – Hanjin boldly welcomed the New Year when it unveiled its simultaneous naming ceremony of two newly-built bulk carriers on Thursday at the company’s sprawling shipbuilding facility in Redondo Peninsula, here.

The vessels-naming ceremony was witnessed by His Excellency President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino II who stood as one of the vessels’ sponsors.

Aquino said that “today, Koreans make up a significant portion of the country’s expat and community and Korean investors like Hanjin, are among the most aggressive in placing their bets in the Philippines.”

“As the country’s leading foreign direct investors in the first semester of 2010, Hanjin poured out Php24.2 billion or forty percent of the total foreign direct investment,” he said.

“Korea has continued to pour in more long term investments in the country and continue to generate jobs for the Filipino people,” Aquino said.

During the vessels-naming ceremony, Jin Kyu Ahn, president of Hanjin-Philippines, cited the challenges the company had to go through in putting up state-of-the-art shipyard in the country’s premier Freeport.

He also commended the Philippine government, the Filipino workers and the Filipino people in general for the friendship, positive attitude towards work, and their hospitality.

Ahn also mentioned the company’s earnest desire to permanently put the Philippines as the best shipbuilder in the world.

“We need the unwavering and reliable support of the Philippine government pursuant to the main thrust of President Aquino’s administration towards a strong public-private partnership that will propel the economy for the long term benefit of all stakeholders and the country as a whole,” Ahn added.

This event was also attended by the Hanjin’s Group Chairman, Nam Ho Cho, Adani Group’s Managing Director Rajesh Adani, Department of Energy Secretary Jose Almendras, Zambales 1st District Representative Milagros Magsaysay, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Chairman Feliciano G. Salonga, SBMA Administrator Armand Arreza, Local Government officials and guests.

The two vessels, M/V “Rahi” and M/V “Vanshi” named after sponsors Miss Rahi R. Adani and Miss Vanshi R. Adani, will be delivered a day after the naming ceremony at the Adani shipyard in India.
