MALOLOS CITY—Diversity in culture, arts and history between Bulacan and Pampanga can now be bridged with the launch of a new book about the two provinces.
Dubbed as “Bigkis”, the new book will be launched on January 23, in time for the 112thanniversary of the Malolos Republic at the historic Barasoain Church here.
Jose Clemente, chair of the Arte Bulakenyo Foundation Inc., (ABFI) and publisher of “Bigkis” said the book is a must have not only for Bulakenyos and Kapampangans, but for students and lovers of history, culture and the arts.
“Marami nang impormasyon hinggil sa mga lalawigan ng Bulacan at Pampanga ang nasaliksik at nailathala. Ngunit walang katulad ang “Bigkis”dahil sa pagitan ng dalawang takip o pabalat nito ay natipon ang pinakamaraming impormasyong pangkalinangan, pang-sining at pangkasaysayan hinggil sa dalawang dakilang lalawigan ng ating bansa,” Clemente said.
Choosing to speak in vernacular to highlight the dialect spoken by Bulakenyos, he added, “magkaiba man ng lenggwaheng inuusal subali’t iisa naman ang ibig pakahulugan. Ang importante ay nagkakaintindihan pa rin hindi man sa salita kundi sa isip at gawa. Ang aklat na ito ang magsisilbing tulay ng dalawang lalawigan tungo sa mas matibay na pagkabansa ng ating arkipelago.”
Indeed, with 250 pages, “Bigkis” is a new book that binds the rich cultural, historical and significant contribution of the provinces of Bulacan and Pampanga in the pursuit of Philippine independence from colonial rule.
Clemente also took pride not only for the comprehensive and authoritative research conducted by the men and women who contributed to “Bigkis,” but for sheer “freshness” of materials included in it.
This is due to the fact that over 97 percent of the contents of “Bigkis” came from the researches presented, and read during the “Unang Pambansang Kumperensya ng Bulacan at Pampanga para sa Kasaysayan, Sining at Kalinangan” also dubbed “Sangandaan sa Iisang Daan” held at the Holy Angel University in Angeles City last May 12-14, 2009.
Clemente said that materials presented during the said conference only deserved to be compiled, printed and distributed for Bulakenyos and Kapampangas to read.
“This is no ordinary book, and it is being compared to a “one-stop-shop” grocery store because of its rich records of cultural and historical heritage of Bulacan and Pampanga,” he said.
He als noted that the book also contains some folklores of the “taga-ilog” or the Tagalogs of Bulacan and the “taga-pampang” or the Kapangpangans of Pampanga province.
Going back to his fluent vernacular, Clemente said, “kung ikukumpara sa isang punong kahoy, ito ay hitik sa bunga na maaaring pagbasehan at gamiting batayan ng mga susunod na pag-aaral; o kaya ay sa pagkilala sa dalawang dakilang lahi ng Pilipino na sa kabila ng pinaghiwalay ng ilog at wika ay kumikilala sa kontribusyon ng bawat isa sa kani-kanilang kalinangan at kasaysayan.”
