CABANATUAN CITY – Cabiao, Nueva Ecija’s police chief became the first casualty of the Philippine National Police’s (PNP’s) campaign against the illegal numbers game in the province, a ranking police official disclosed on Wednesday.

Senior Supt. Roberto Aliggayu, director of the Nueva Ecija police provincial office, said that Chief Insp. Peter Madria was relieved from his post as a result of the police’s self-imposed “one strike policy” on its re-intensified campaign against jueteng over the weekend.

Madria was replaced by Chief Insp. Jonathan Alayan from Rizal, Nueva Ecija, Aliggayu said.

“One strike policy ang reason,” Aliggayu told Punto Central Luzon when asked on the ground of Madria’s relief.

Earlier, elements of the provincial police security company (PPSC) led by Supt. Allan Okubo arrested four alleged sales supervisors of jueteng in an entrapment operation in barangay Bagong Silang Cabiao.

Alligayu said he ordered the operation upon receiving reports that some people in the area operate as “bookies” of the Small Town Lottery (STL). “Nahuli silang ginagamit na front ang legal,” Aliggayu said.

This developed as Vice Gov. Jose Gay Padiernos said the provincial board would investigate and ask the police to explain why jueteng continue to operate in Nueva Ecija.

“All we know is that we only have STL here, we will ask the police as they attend our session,” Padiernos said.

But Padiernos clarified that jueteng will only be a side issue in their meeting since the SP actually called on Aliggayu to brief the board on the peace and order, that includes heavy traffic here that has been criticized by motorists and commuters.

The board, according to Padiernos, would also invite government officials to explain to them how STL, under CTG Prime Ventures, operate in the province and how much the provincial government earns from its operation.
