CABANATUAN CITY – Heavy wind and flood brought by Typhoon Ulysses that battered huge part of Luzon incurred damage of at least P131,872,282 in rice crops in Nueva Ecija, according to the provincial risk reduction and management council.
Aside from rice, the PDRRMC also recorded damage to onions estimated at P557,620,000 and fruits and vegetables at P86,809,000.
Dr. Abraham Pascua, PDRRMC consultant and spokesperson, said the figures were based on initial data from the office of the provincial agriculturist asthey continue to validate reports coming in to their office.
Hardest hit in onion crops was Bongabon, the onion basket of the Philippines, having incurred an estimated loss of P250,720 followed by San Jose City at P126,600, the report said.
Other municipalities that reported losses in onion crops were Sto. Domingo with P31,500; Laur, P84,600; Rizal, P24,000; and Llanera, P40,000.
“Ang Bongabon ay maraming nasirang sibuyas kasi sila yung talagang nagtatanim ng palusot (off-season),” Pascua said.
Initial reports also showed that at least 870 families, comprising 3,818 individuals were affected by the typhoon in Nueva Ecija.
They were evacuated to various centers in the province, said Pascua.
