ALAVERA, Nueva Ecija – Move over sardines, at least for a moment.

A farmers cooperative distributed on Wednesday porkto its members who are also affected by the extended Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine.

The Canaan East Rice and Onion Producers Coop., a group of agrarian reform beneficiaries from Rizal, Nueva Ecija, gave away pork packs of 1/2kg to 1kg to each of its 163 members, according to Provincial Agrarian Reform Officer 1 Jocelyn Ramones.

The group led by chair Teofista Mariano, bought the 153-kilo live swine, as a support to another member which they slaughtered for distribution.

“Cooperativism is always alive in times of crisis, especially this Covid-19,Ramones said.

She stressed that a huge number of farmers have already received rice and groceries from several agrarian reform beneficiaries organizations since the ECQ.

“That’s why the chairman (Mariano) thought of giving pork instead,” she said.

More ARBOs and cooperatives assisted by the Department of Agrarian Reform have been into relief operations in their respective communities as a way of cooperating with the government’s efforts in cushioning the effects of the Covid-19  crisis.
