FOOD SECURITY – that is food on the table, or dulang as the case maybe, of even the poorest of the poor Kapampangan families – is one priority of Gov. Lilia G. Pineda.
“Proper nutrition, especially of the children, is a required complement of any health program.” So holds Nanay Baby, hence the launch of her Gulayan sa Bawat Bakuran program Friday last week – at the most auspicious of venues – the demo farm leased to Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo at the Clark Freeport.
With all the municipal agricultural officers present, Mayors Boking Morales of Mabalacat, Eddie Guerrero of Floridablanca, Ric Rivera of Guagua and Leonora Wong of San Simon, Department of Agriculture Director Mamerto Gatus, the governor set up the direction for a green revolution to be waged in backyards as well as vacant lands.
The site of the launching – the demo farm – provided the governor a clear vision of how her Gulayan program could run and succeed, as she had a grand day at the farm, checking the plant nursery where she showed keen interest in the tomato seedling, getting a whiff of fragrant basil, harvesting upo and squash, picking papayas and green pepper, tasting succulent melon and sweet atis, ending up buying practically all the produce for the day. To the happiness of the farmers.
Happiest though that day was Pelayo, having proven the viability of his demo farm, thereby strengthening his position, if not his lease, on the property being contested by the Clark International Airport Corp.
