MALOLOS CITY—Flights bound for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) were diverted to the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) at the Clark Freeport on Saturday.
This included an international flight and 10 domestic flights. All flights later flew back to NAIA after a brief stay at the DMIA.
DMIA officials said they started receiving diverted flights bound for NAIA around 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Alexander Cauguiran, chief operating officer of the DMIA, said the planes that that landed at the DMIA include five Cebu Pacific, two Dornier, and one each for Jet Stream, Air Philippines, Philippine Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.
He said that passenger of Cebu Pacific flights from Dumaguete and Tacloban briefly disembark on the DMIA arrival area while passengers of other diverted flights stayed on board until the flight schedule normalized.
As the nearest international airport to NAIA, Cauguiran said that DMIA is the usual recipient of diverted flights.
He noted that DMIA facilities can accommodate more planes and flights compared to NAIA noting that DMIA has two parallel runways.
Presently, DMIA is considered as the premier airport of the country. Clark airport officials are planning massive improvement of facilities including the construction of air terminals.
