CABANATUAN CITY -A multi-sectoral group called Novo Ecijano Moral Force Coalition Movement yesterday launched a campaign to urge Chief Justice Reynato Puno, whose roots were traced from a lowly town of Nueva Ecija, to run for President in 2010.
The call was made by the group to mark the 113th anniversary of the First Cry of Nueva Ecija, an annual celebration for the heroism of Novo Ecijanos who answered the call for revolution against Spaniards by Gat Andres Bonifacio in 1896.
“A noble event in the Philippine history when patriotic Novo Ecijanos joined the Filipino nation’s uprising,” said Teofilo Parilla, secretary-general of the People’s Unity and New Order.
“Now we are united once again to show our disgust over dismal immoderation and unrestrained behavior in our government,” a statement read by the movement officials said.
The movement, which claimed 2.5 million membership nationwide, said that Novo Ecijanos “united by a common goal of a peaceful, united and orderly society are joining hands once again.”
History showed that Filipino guerillas led by Gens. Mariano Llanera from Cabiao and Pantaleon Valmonte of Gapan, trooped to the Spanish garrison in nearby town of Factoria (now Gen. Tinio) with a musical band called Musikong Bumbong as a decoy on Sept. 2, 1896. This attack surprised Spanish officials and ignited a full blown revolution against the colonizers.
Parilla said that movement officials have direct contact with Puno. Puno, he said, could not make any political announcement lest his work at the judiciary be politicized. “Justice Puno would listen to the people’s cry for him to run,” Parilla said.
He admitted though that unlike Sen. Benigno Aquino III, Puno had not set or sought any sign that will convince him to run.
Parilla said some 650,000 workers donate P5 each daily for the Puno for President campaign. The chief justice, he said, had no money to use for heavy campaigning.
