TARLAC CITY—The 6,000-member-strong Teachers Organization of the Philippine Public Sector (TOPPS) has joined the chorus of teacher-organizations demanding for the safe release of three government teachers seized by kidnappers last January 23 off Sacol Island in Zamboanga City.

Michaela Sagun, TOPPS president, said the organization “strongly condemn to the highest possible degree of condemnation” the abduction of Quizon Freires, 28, Janette delos Reyes, 29, and Rafael Mayonado, 24. All are public school teachers assigned in the islands of Landang Gua and Pangapuyan.

Their captors, who brought them to the nearby Basilan Island, are demanding P6 million in ransom money.

“We believe that this is not just a simple money-making activity but also a direct attack to the government and the community by terrorizing people to instill fear and anxiety,” she said.
Sagun, who is also dean of the College of Business Administration at the Tarlac State University (TSU), urged the government “to do something for the immediate release of the abducted teachers.”
