THE HONORABLE Carmelo “Tarzan” Lazatin (1st District-Pampanga) was not joking when he declared the equally Honorable Tony H. Mamac, chairman of Barangay Balibago as “future mayor” right to the face of sitting Mayor Francis “Blueboy” Nepomuceno at the Dec. 8 inauguration of Mamac’s city, er, barangay hall.

As serious as Mang Tarzan are people who believe a Mayor Mamac can make a big difference in the city as that Major Mamac did in the campaign against the communist insurgency.

Already, groundwork has started to seat Mamac at city hall in 2010. If we are to believe some espresso buddies of mine at Firenzzi, SM City Clark who are all-out for the bemedalled former police officer.

My coffeemates claimed of already having formed a political machinery aptly acronymed MAMAC – Movement for the Advancement of the Masses of Angeles City.

“We were surprised at the swell of grassroots support from both the rural masses and the urban poor after news of Cong Tarzan’s endorsement of  T-Mac (Mamac’s political moniker) came out in your paper and over the radio,” one said. “This shows a great disenchantment among the people over the Nepomuceno regime.”

Quipped the other: “So we have to take advantage of the situation. Present a leader who is truly of the masses and for the masses, and T-Mac fits that to a tee, having proven himself in the battle for the hearts and minds of the people at the height of the insurgency here in the city.”

Okay, so that’s the rationale for MAMAC. But that’s not all to winning an election, especially for Angeles mayor.

“Of course. We’re not idiots. MAMAC consists of operational plans and strategies. At the core of MAMAC are ex-military, ex-police and rebel returnees. We look at elections as wars,” retorted one.

Any oplans in the works now?

“We have a strategic plan called Program for the Unification of Transients in Angeles, PUTA for short. This covers non-Kapampangan city residents. You will be surprised at the number of Bicolanos, Warays, Ilonggos, Cebuanos, and even those from Mindanao who have made the city their home. A potent political bloc each regional grouping will make once they are organized and tapped.”

    Good this PUTA, eh.

“There are operation plans under PUTA. The targets further segmented to specific sectors as in Oplan  PAMUKI (Panglungsod na Alyansa ng Marangal at Ulirang Kababaihang Iniirog) for the working women of Fields Avenue; Oplan SINAPAK (Sikyung Nagkakaisa Para sa Kaunlaran) for the  security guards; Oplan MATODAS (Mamac’s Alliance of Tricycle Operators and Drivers Associations) for the trikes and pedicabs…”

Very colorful names, you have there.

“In keeping with the character of Angeles. And, being gender-sensitive, we have a specific group for the third sex too, which we call Dangal ng Ikatlong Lahi ng Angeles, DILA for short.”

Hold it there, you may be charged with copyright infringement there. There is a gay organization called Dangal ng Ikatlong Lahi ng Apalit, with DILA as acronym too. This was the secret political weapon of the now lamented, dearly departed Mayor Tirso “Pogi” Lacanilao in winning all his three terms as mayor.

“See the universal wisdom in tapping the third sex for political purposes? Well, to differentiate our gay group we may just call it DILA NI MAMAC for Dangal ng Ikatlong Lahi ang Nagkaisang Ipaglaban si Mamac sa pagka- Mayor ng Angeles City.”

Quite a mouthful but will do. So I grant that you have a political machinery, how about the money?

“Money is not that great a problem here. Would you believe, upon hearing that T-Mac is being endorsed to run for mayor, we were swamped by calls of donation to his cause? What is heartwarming is the initial calls came from people of all walks of life around Fields Avenue.”

    Give some specifics.

“Okay, there were dancers who said they would rather give P100 every night to help Mamac become mayor than waste it to the Jojo Group that preyed on them purportedly for some higher-ups at city hall. The same is said by the bargirls for their P50 per beer tong per night that the Jojo Group extorts. More than five bar owners told us they would rather give P50,000 per month to Mamac than to what they called the “running dogs of city hall.’”
Wow! If what you’re saying is true, Mamac’s candidacy for the Angeles mayorship is truly viable. His chances of winning well within the realm of the possible.

    “Wanna bet?”

     Are you for real?
