TARLAC CITY— Mayor Ace Manalang declared on Friday that the Uptown Public Market still belongs to the city government countering rumors that it has already been sold to a private firm.

According to Manalang, the city government only entered into a lease agreement with the Paliparan Corp. to have an “organized, clean facility and cover the losses incurred by the market” since its construction.

But Manalang stressed that although the said facility is now managed by Paliparan, it has to follow the market code being implemented by the city including the prevailing rental rates.

He added that the market code is stipulated in the lease agreement signed by the two parties and Paliparan should adhere with the contract.

He also advised Paliparan to respect the poor vendors and be patient with them because they are their clients while he told the vendors to cooperate with Paliparan and obey the rules implemented by the firm.

In a meeting last Friday with the market vendor and stall owners, Manalang revealed that at least 511 new stalls at the Phase II are available for occupancy.

He advised the vendors to organize themselves into one umbrella association or federation so that when problems arise, they will have a representative to communicate with the city government.

He also pleaded with the vendors to maintain cleanliness and orderliness not only for the beautification of the market but for their own health.

Manalang also disclosed that more improvement would be undertaken at the marketplace including the boulevard and the adjacent Tanedo and Del Pilar Streets.
