SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – A bodyguard of Buluan, Maguindanao Vice Mayor Esmael Mangundadatu shot and killed two security personnel assigned at the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Law Enforcement Department (LED) inside the LED office, Monday afternoon.
In a press conference, LED head Retired General Orlando Maddela Jr. identified the fatalities as LED officers Ceferino Abadia, 60, resident of Olongapo City and SPO4 Delfin Orines from Subic, Zambales.
Perpetrator identified as Mohamedin Panegas Ali, 39, was earlier reported missing by his companions PO3 Nasser Dilangalen and Faustino Bernil, both security personnel of Vice Mayor Mangandadatu, and assigned with 1207 Philippine Mobile Group based in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat.
Maddela said at about past 3 p.m. on the same date, a certain Christian Montoya, admin staff at Sapphire Instrument located at Lot 28 Innovative St., Subic Gateway Park reported to the LED office that Ali was at their office and seeking assistance for fear of his life.
LED officers Edwin Nopal and Rexie Alinea of SWAT Branch were dispatched to escort Ali to the LED office. Ali earlier requested that he be allowed to stay at the Special Action Force (SAF) office in Morong, Bataan, as he was a former member of that unit.
Maddela coordinated with SAF Batallion Commander P/Supt Jonas Amparo who sent his personnel to fetch Ali from LED’s custody.
While waiting for SAF, the suspect, who was with escorts Nopal and Alinea inside the LED office, suddenly requested that he get his identification card which was inside his brown belt bag at a table near Nopal. Also in the bag was an Amscor .45 caliber pistol and a magazine with ammunition.
Nopal said when he sensed that Ali was not after his ID but the gun, he immediately grabbed the suspect but was not able to control him immediately because Ali is bigger than him.
Ali fired indiscriminately killing officers Abadia and Orines standing outside the office. He was subdued afterwards and was turned over to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-SOCO for further investigation.
Charges of double murder will be slapped against the suspect.
Meanwhile, SBMA Administrator Armand Arreza said the agency has provided the necessary assistance to the family of the victims and asked the immediate processing of whatever benefits due them.
“This incident is a testament to the hazards that our law enforcement officers face every day in the performance of their duties. We assure the Freeport community and the public that the SBMA Law Enforcement Department will continue to serve them and remain steadfast in their commitment to secure their investments, property and lives – even at the risk of their own,” Arreza added.
