Managing type 2 diabetes in the Philippines: Everyday habits for better diabetes control

A care plan for someone with type 2 diabetes can make perfect sense in a doctor’s office yet feel nearly impossible to follow on an ordinary weekday. In today’s fast-paced world, work, family and shifting schedules compete for attention, compromising even the most well-intentioned diabetes-management routine. The challenge is not finding the “ideal” plan, but one that is practical and repeatable, even when the day does not go as planned.

“If a diabetes management routine only works on a perfect day, it is not much of a routine,” says Dr. Gamaliel Tayao, Abbott’s head of medical affairs in the Philippines. “The useful question is what an individual with a health condition like diabetes can keep doing when their schedule changes.”

This message aligns with the World Health Organization’s World Diabetes Day 2026 theme, “Early action on diabetes,” which highlights the importance of early diagnosis, access to care and everyday choices that support better health.

Why early action matters

As diabetes becomes increasingly prevalent in the Philippines, there is a growing risk that it will be dismissed as just another part of growing older. But accepting diabetes as inevitable is the real danger. According to the International Diabetes Federation, an estimated 4.7 million Filipino adults are living with diabetes , while 2 out of 10 adults age 20 to 59 have elevated blood sugar levels that could progress to type 2 diabetes if left unmanaged. 1,2

Acting early matters because diabetes can affect many parts of the body over time, increasing the risk of serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, vision loss, kidney disease and lower limb amputations.3,4 People with type 2 diabetes also face a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular events compared to those without the condition.5

However, managing diabetes is not defined by a single decision. It is shaped by the choices people make every day, from what they eat and how active they are to whether they take medications as prescribed and monitor their blood sugar regularly.

As Dr. Tayao explains, the key is finding approaches that are realistic and sustainable. This may include practical solutions, such as incorporating diabetes-specific nutrition like Glucerna when preparing a balanced meal is not always possible.

“For people living with type 2 diabetes, nutrition plays an important role in supporting blood sugar management. Abbott’s clinically proven diabetes-specific formula contains slow-release carbohydrates that provide steady energy to help manage blood sugar response, along with 4x myo-inositol, which plays a role in helping the body manage glucose levels,” said Dr Tayao.

Building a routine that works in real life

The goal is not building a perfect routine but a resilient one — a set of habits that can absorb the shocks of an unpredictable day and still keep blood sugar management on track. Small adjustments, repeated consistently, can add up to meaningful progress over time.

Try these practical steps that can be adapted to different routines and lifestyles:

Swap, don’t eliminate: Replace white rice with brown rice or mixed grains in gradual proportions. Small reductions in refined carbohydrates can help manage post-meal blood sugar response.

Move after meals: A 15-minute walk after a meal — even around the office or around the block — can help the body process glucose more effectively.

Set reminders: Use phone alarms or apps to ensure meals and prescribed medicines are taken on time, every day.

Stay hydrated: Choose water over sugary drinks. Staying hydrated supports kidney function and helps regulate blood sugar levels.

Plan for imperfect days: Keep convenient nutrition options, such as Glucerna Ready-to-Drink, on hand for busy mornings or unexpected schedule changes when a balanced meal is not always practical.

Monitor regularly: Use glucose-monitoring tools, such as continuous glucose monitors, to understand how daily choices affect blood sugar levels.

Starting early, starting small

Managing type 2 diabetes does not have to mean overhauling your lifestyle overnight. Small, consistent habits — whether choosing healthier meals, incorporating diabetes-specific nutrition, taking medications on time, staying active or monitoring blood sugar levels — can help support better diabetes management in everyday life.

If you are living with type 2 diabetes or caring for someone who is, speak with your healthcare professional about building a manageable care plan that fits your daily life. Early action, even in small steps, can make a lasting difference.
