ANGELES CITY – “It’s a clear case of harassment.”
Thus said Claro M. Recto Village Chief Val Lagman as members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) based in Camp Olivas arrested yesterday afternoon mayoralty aspirant Balibago Barangay Captain Rodelio “Tony” Mamac in connection with libel charges filed against him by Mayor Francis “Blueboy” Nepomuceno in April.
Lagman said “the mayor should not have filed libel charges because Mamac was just informing him of the alleged extortion activities in Balibago.”
He disclosed that Mamac earlier wrote Nepomuceno a letter informing the latter about the alleged illegal activities in Barangay Balibago.
“There was enough reminder from Mamac through a letter to the mayor. There was no malice on the part of Mamac and he was just taking care of complaining traders in his area,” said Lagman.
Mamac was reportedly arrested while holding office at the barangay hall in Balibago by CIDG members with a warrant of arrest issued by a court in the City of San Fernando.
Last March, Mamac sponsored a tourism summit at the Barangay Hall attended by American businessman Richard Dale.
Dale said there were alleged rampant extortion activities in entertainment bars, adding that Nepomuceno has “knowledge” of it.
“The mayor has knowledge of it (extortion). If he wants, he can stop it,” said Dale as quoted by Punto earlier.
In a phone interview, Mamac said: “heto, pinahuli na ako ni mayor” and added that he would be taken by the arresting cops to Camp Olivas.
Mamac, in an interview after the tourism summit last March, assailed the city government for “inaction to act on the media expose and complaints from women and business sectors.”
“It’s quite unfortunate that the city government remains silent on this issue, women are abused through the exorbitant smear fees imposed by them,” he added in an earlier interview.
Meanwhile, in a phone interview, City Administrator Mark Allen Sison said “it was not the mayor but the court that ordered the arrest of Mamac.”
He stressed that he was given “due process.”
“It’s Mamac’s fault. He didn’t attend the hearings and failed to send a representation,” said Sison.
“Baka nagpahuli lang,” added Sison in a jest.
